Acne is one of the most common skin conditions in the world, affecting millions of teenagers and adults alike. While it might feel like a simple cosmetic nuisance, acne is actually a complex, inflammatory medical condition of the skin.
At Derma Healer, the premier Skin & Laser Clinic in Siwan, Bihar, our clinical team—led by Dr. Neha Rani and senior consultant dermatologist Dr. B.K. Sharma (MBBS, MD, 30+ years of experience)—believes that understanding your skin is the first step toward clearing it.
Let’s dive into what is actually happening beneath the surface of your skin when a breakout occurs, and how advanced dermatology can help you achieve lasting, clear skin.
Acne doesn’t just appear overnight; it develops due to a perfect storm of biological events happening inside your pilosebaceous units (your hair follicles and their attached oil glands).

As shown in the medical diagram above, a breakout is typically triggered by a chain reaction of four distinct events:
Your sebaceous glands produce an oily substance called sebum, which is essential for keeping your skin hydrated. However, hormonal fluctuations (such as an excess of androgens during puberty, menstrual cycles, or stress) can cause these glands to go into overdrive, producing a massive surplus of oil.
Normally, dead skin cells shed off the surface naturally. In acne-prone skin, this shedding process malfunctions. The dead cells stick together, mixing with the excess sebum to form a solid plug that traps everything inside the hair follicle.
Your skin naturally hosts a variety of microscopic organisms. One specific bacterium, Cutibacterium acnes (formerly known as Propionibacterium acnes), thrives in oxygen-deprived, oil-rich environments. When a pore becomes plugged with sebum, these bacteria multiply rapidly inside the follicle.
As the bacteria multiply, they feed on the trapped sebum and release chemical byproducts. Your body’s immune system recognizes this as an infection and sends white blood cells to fight it. This immune response causes the redness, swelling, heat, and pain that we visually recognize as a pimple or cyst.
There are countless misconceptions surrounding breakouts. Let’s clear up what actually influences your skin:
Mild acne can sometimes respond to over-the-counter topicals, but moderate-to-severe, cystic, or chronic acne requires professional intervention to prevent permanent scarring.
At our safe and hygienic clinic in Siwan, we build personalized, medical-grade treatment pathways combining clinical expertise with USFDA-approved technologies:
